Hero Hugs for Our American Heroes

When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked "What is a hero?" …My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences… Now my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.--Christopher Reeveyrib15.gif - 3.7 K

While Operation Iraqi Friendship focuses on helping the children in Iraq, this program was designed to also help our American soldiers.  We hope that the program will help foster a friendlier relationship between the people of Iraq and the United States soldiers there to help them.  The kids who started Operation Iraqi Friendship will always see the United States soldiers as our true American Heroes and we want to be sure they know how many people back at home think of them and wish them well.  Currently we have two projects we like to call Hero Hugs to support our soldiers serving in Iraq.

Care Bags for Wounded Soldiers:

Currently we send about 30 care bags to Iraq to be passed out to wounded US soldiers in hospitals in Iraq each month.  Each bag consists of crossword puzzle books, novels, magazines, gum, hard candy, small individual packages of cookies, individual bags of peanuts, individual bags of cheetos, a breakfast cereal type bar and some kind of mint like Mentos or Tic Tacs.  Each bag also contains a card from a child in the US wishing the soldier well and thanking them for being an American Hero to us all.  We also include our special roll of American Hero Lifesavers in each one of the bags.  We are always in need of donations of items on the list and rolls of lifesavers along with cards for these packages.  Please contact us at HeroHugs2004@aol.com of you would like to help with this part of our project.  We are told that getting these care bags really helps to lift the spirits of our wounded soldiers.

Often there are Iraqi children in the hospitals who have been injured and we are working to do some bags for these children too.  For these bags we are looking for stuffed animals and especially coloring books that do not have text.  We are also looking for children's pajamas that consist of pants and a button-up top in cute kid prints.  These are hard to find also, so if you can sew and would like to donate some pajamas like this, please contact us.

Holiday Bags for the Troops:

Each month we send some kind of holiday themed bag to the troops serving at Balad Air Base in Iraq.  It is extra hard to be away from family and loved ones during the holidays and we hope our care bags make this time a little easier on the soldiers.  If there is not holiday in a month, we make one up (such as our American Hero holiday).  Usually the bags consist of candy and gum, but this varies to the theme of the bag.  Each of these bags also has a card for the soldier.  If you are interested in helping with one of the holiday bags for the troops, please contact us at HeroHugs2004@aol.com and we will let you know the theme for the next few months packages and more detail on the items we need for those packages.  We have amazing support from classrooms in Okaloosa County School District putting together these packages and really thank them for their continued support!
